I have to take a swim class at school. I’m the slowest swimmer in my class, and it’s humiliating. Everyone else is done long before I get done. I really want to learn the skills properly and get something out of the class. Does anyone have some tips how to do the back kick, front kick, side kick, and freestyle?
Are you talking about swimming freestyle (crawl)? Without being at the pool with you it is virtually impossible to actually help you. You really need to pay close attention to your instructor and see if the instructor can give you a little extra help.
If you want a few tips for the crawl stroke and think you can incorporate them into your swimming … well, here goes:
1. Proper head position is the #1 thing to work on. You should feel like your chin is tucked in toward your chest at all times.
2. Kick with your knees almost locked … slight bend at your knee.
3. Never lock your elbow completely … reach far out in front of your shoulder – finger tips enter the water first – right hand enters, roll on your right side – carve at the water making and “S” shape with your hand – press water back past the bottom of your swim suit (hip) – little finger exits the water first.
4. To breathe FORCEFULLY EXHALE. If you plan to INhale to your right, time your EXhale to when your right hand is ENTERING the water and time your INhale to when your LEFT hand is entering the water. KEEP KICKING all the time while you breathe.
5. Six kicks per left/right arm stroke (called a stroke cycle).
Go slow … don’t try to go fast as you’ll get tired and then you’ll not be able to do any of that stuff.
