I’m 17, and I want to start swimming laps like 1 -2 times a week, for like around 45 minutes each time. mostly front crawl and backstroke.
I really really don’t want like extremely broad shoulders like most swimmers have.

If you want to try doing a triathlon or you already have done one, being able to swim is a priority. Now, this does not mean you have to be a good swimmer but swimming good does help. You can do the swim portion of a triathlon by any swim stroke you want to try.
You could be good or even great at cycling or running and this could make up for lack of swim skills, but if you want to be more completive you need to work on your swim. Learning to do the front crawl or freestyle as it is called would be the fastest stroke to use to get you through the water.
Hopefully you have a pool available you can use for practice. Most towns or counties have a public swimming pool and many set up a lane or two for lap swimmers. If so try to get in the water at least a few times per week to get used to swimming and work on your freestyle technique. If you want to get better at swimming, you need to swim!
Just swim slowly at first to try and get the freestyle technique down as best you can. You can do some research online and find lots of tutorials on how to do this. You must also do some fast swimming to push yourself some; you won’t get faster unless you swim fast.
Swimming in the pool and the open water are different. If you are in the ocean you may have small waves or the water may be choppy which could make it more challenging. You have to run into the water at the start and doing a little practice for this can even help a bit.
And more importantly when doing the open water swim, you will have to deal with all the other swimmers jockeying for position and getting elbowed or kicked is a possibility.
If you want to discover more about how to correctly swim the freestyle and improve your triathlon swim, be more efficient in the water and gain speed? Go to http://www.squidoo.com/master-the-freestyle-swimming-technique“>Master the Freestyle for more information on how you can achieve this.
