Hi,
I want to be better at freestyle / front crawl but im not sure how to improve. Any general tips or common mistakes you can tell me?
I’m new to Triathlons this year (have done 2 now, and signed up for a few more), but I’m not really sure how to improve my bike and swim times. For a 750m swim it took me 18mins, and 20k bike was almost 50 mins.
My runs are improving alright, but i just can’t seem to get faster on the bike. And as for training for the swim, I just go to the beach and swim front crawl for 20-30mins.
Any advice??

I have only recently taught myself to swim(before I could only swim a few metres), I swim half a kilometre freestyle 2-3 times a week, I breathe on alternate sides every third stroke. I’d like some tips on what I can do to improve, eg should I try to splash less, should I stretch further with each stroke, etc
I usually swim breaststroke, but I’d like to start with front crawl as well. But my kick is really bad. I also tried the dolphin kick, and I hardly advance at all.
Hi, I am Alex N’s nephew and I’m 12 years old(going to be 13 this year).
I need someone to tell me what should I do to improve my 100m front crawl timing. Now my timing is 2 minutes and 44 seconds. I find this unsatisfactory. My 100m breaststroke timing is 1 min 50 seconds at best and 2 mins at worst and I would really like to be able to swim front crawl faster than breaststroke.
My instructor says my stroke is not bad, but not that good either and he’s gonna’ work with me on this. Since my lessons are only once a week(I might be able to go swimming one more day but thats the max), I want to know what else can I do to improve. It seems like I lack the strength and explosive power to swim fast all the way and it seems like I do better in long distance swims. Someone help me please?
Tip No1. Start playing memory games and games that involve lots of thinking.
Such games would be chess, checkers, sudoku or logic games that are to be found online. This way you will both have fun and sharpen your brain. If you like computer games, I advice you trying Myst. It is a beautiful game with very hard puzzles.
Tip No2. Use associations.
When you have to remember something specific, be sure to associate it with some funny or bizarre image or event. You can think of whatever you want as long as it stays in your mind. You should remember a funny and unique image because that way it will stay in your brain better than a common image you can see everyday.
Tip No3. Use less technology and more your brain
Try to use less calculators and mobile phone contacts. Try to do the equations in head and remember phone numbers and names using associations. The more you will use these techniques, the better your memory will become, and a good memory will always be a huge benefit.
Tip No4. Notice small details.
Pay attention to details and minor things. When you meet a friend, notice what clothing or jewelry she/he is wearing. When you enter some area, notice how many objects are there and where they are. Then close your eyes and try to recall what you saw. You can do this anywhere. For example, when you enter a parking lot, try to look at it for a few seconds, then close your eyes and recall how many cars where their, what brands where they and color of the cars.
Tip No5. Be fit and exercise.
By doing cardio exercises your body will be in good shape and more oxygen will be delivered to your brain such way improving your memory. You can choose from tons of exercises: running, climbing, playing ball, rope jumping, athletics. Choose one which you enjoy. I for example absolutely hate running, I rather swim.

If you are trying to improve your swim technique or improve your efficiency in the water, you need to work on some swimming drills. Do some drills every time you workout, include technique drills as part of this.
If you can fine tune your technique for the freestyle you can make the stroke more effortless which would translate to better times. In addition improving technique would help you expend a little less energy.
You can never do to many drills to improve technique and you should do drills that targets the different aspects of the swim. Done repeatedly, drills will allow you to get good enough that you do not have to think about what you are doing, it becomes second nature.
Another important aspect of swimming if you are a competitive swimmer is dealing with distractions. If you are not able to focus on the job at hand you will lose some of your edge when you get in the pool. You need to train yourself to not be distracted by the noise and goings on around you, learn to concentrate on your mission which is to swim the best times you can.
A lot of how well you do in sports is related to your mental state. Being in control of your mental state will give you the chance to perform at your best. A little research online can help you find methods for doing drills and improving your mental state. It would be well worth your time to learn more about these two important areas of training and competition.
